You can also get blocks of foam from companies that sell trailers.

They use them when the trailers are stacked together for shipping.

ODHAII -I'm in auburn right now. I have finals next week and then I have the AWF state cookoff on August the 9th [Lee County Cook Off Champs- woohoo] but I'll be back in Madison on the 10th or 11th for probably a week. I'd really enjoy meeting up with you and seeing your decoys. I got my first attempt carved out today but am going to have to wait to finish it because I have two test monday and tuesday. Where in HUntsville are you located?

If you are having trouble finding heads you like let me know.  I dont have any puddle duck heads but I do have redheads, Cans, Bluebills, and Goldeneyes.  I have solid plastic heads that are nearly indestructable but a little on the heavy side.  Or the same thing in high-density urethane foam ( with solid plastic bill).  They are very light but not quite as sturdy as the solid urethane heads.  PM me if you are interested.

I'm working on some buffleheads right now as well. Toledo Decoy seems to have the best combination of reasonable price and good looks. They are not that hard to carve though. I just went to home depot and bought a rasp and a set of carving knives with the replaceable X-acto style blades. I traced several out on a 2x4 and cut them out with a jig saw. Don't worry if the first one looks pretty rough, you will be surprised how much improvement between #1 and #2 and so on.

billy-I bet that is alot cheaper than buying them. How are you attaching them, are you burlapping them with the foam or are you putting a I bolt in them? Also, what kind of wood is the best or what do you use to make your keel? Will you post some pictures of your buffleheads so that I can have an idea of how to paint them and all.

I just used a piece of fir 2x4, but white pine or anything soft will work. Since you are in the deep south you might be able to get a deal on bass or tuepelo. The heads can be attached with a dowell or an eye bolt through the body. I've been mostly working on heads and have onlt done one body so far. Tahat one has a bottom board with the keel screwed through it into the decoy body. I am going to try to make my next body more like the old round bottom decoys with the keel set into a groove it the bottom of the decoy. If it works I am hoping they will have a little more action in the water. My job has me out of town for a little while so I can't post pictures or work on them now that this thread has me itching to get back at it.
